OLYMPICS: USA Hockey Women Win Gold

Very early Thursday morning at the Olympics, the United States women’s hockey team took gold over Canada.

The game went into overtime tied at two. Neither side scored in the exciting sudden-victory period where the goalies made miraculous saves. Every hockey fan in North America sat on the edge of their seat -- or felt too stressed to watch.

To determine the championship, the teams took turns in a shoot-out. One skater against the goalie. The game was still knotted at two after the regulation five shots from each side. Finally, in sudden-death shoot-outs, the Canadians failed to answer the USA’s first goal.

Final score: 3-2 and victory for the Americans. (NBC Sports)

Talk About It:

  • Canada had won gold the previous four Olympics, including an overtime win in Sochi, Russia against the Americans.
  • The USA women’s team had not won gold in 20 years.
  • On this date, February 22 1980, the men’s USA Olympic hockey team upset the Russians in the “Miracle on Ice” at Lake Placid, New York.
