During the promotional run for Ben Affleck's upcoming film The Way Back, the 47-year-old actor has been participating in a series of candid interviews discussing his divorce, struggle with alcoholism and more. After the New York Times published their wide-ranging interview with Affleck, reporter Brooks Barnes took to Twitter to share a quote that didn't make the final cut.
While chatting with Barnes, Affleck discussed his ex-fiance Jennifer Lopez. The pair met on set of their 2002 film Gigli and got engaged later that year. They called of their wedding just four days before the ceremony was set to take place. Years later, Lopez would call her split from Affleck her first real heartbreak. Even though their romance didn't work out, Affleck had nothing but good things to say about his ex, especially about her critically acclaimed performance in the 2019 film Hustlers.
“She should have been nominated," Affleck said. "She’s the real thing. I keep in touch periodically with her and have a lot of respect for her. How awesome is it that she had her biggest hit movie at 50? That’s f—ing baller."
Lopez seems to have the same respect for Affleck. In 2015, she told the Huffington Post she had absolutely no regrets about their relationship. “I would do it all over again, I think. I really would. Even the relationship part,” Lopez said. “I just feel like everything is part of your story and your journey and is meant to be and helps you grow if you're willing to look at it, and I'm willing to look.”
Though both moved on to other relationships after their split, Lopez once told People she believes her relationship with Affleck could've worked out if the timing was different. “I think different time different thing, who knows what could’ve happened, but there was a genuine love there,” she said.
