How to Lose your First Date with 10 Questions—The Do Not Ask List

A first date can be nerve-wrecking; especially if you’ve been out of the dating scene for a while.  We created a brief list of questions that you should NOT ask on your first date.

1. How much do you weigh?

Stop right there!  This is a very sensitive question, especially for a woman.  The question about weight can suggest you are not pleased with how your date looks like.  It can possibly ruin the rest of the evening playing to that person’s insecurities or even upsetting your date and getting a well-deserved slap.  Ouch!

2. How old are you?

Never ask someone their age.  If your date looks slightly young, it’s understandable you are trying to make sure he or she is over the age of 18, therefore simply asking “are you over 18”, with a nice smile, will suffice. On the other side of the spectrum, if you are on a date with someone who appears to be in their 30s and up, the question may be offensive because it suggests you are calling your date old.

3. What’s your credit score?

Say what?  So you ask because you feel that if your date has a good credit score, he is organized and responsible, but the truth is that this question is too heavy for a first date.  You will probably be stereotyped as a gold digger looking for a relationship for all the wrong reasons.

4. How much money do you make?

Again, this is a big no no and it goes hand in hand with the question about credit score. This is a great way to make a terrible first impression and come across as someone looking for a sugar momma.   If you want to get an idea of your date’s financial stability you can start by asking ‘what do you do for a living?’ Or you can volunteer that information first; which makes the other person feel more at ease

5. Do you do this often?

What does that even mean! Go on random dates? Order sushi? Wear too much makeup? Have dessert before dinner? Is the asker implying that her date is a playboy? a man/woman whore? A pro at first dates? This question will make your date feel uncomfortable and kill any potential chemistry going on.  Mind your own business and stick to asking ‘how’s your salad?!

6. When was your last relationship?

Danger zone—Do not pass go.  Do not collect $200.  If you ask this question your date may just burst into tears at the thought of a bad and recent breakup and you’ll be left consoling her and serving as a therapist. Not only that but unless you have no shame, you’ll also pay for dinner and tell her to just call her ex and try to work things out.   Or what if he proposed and she said no!  Bad, bad idea and he may just throw a tantrum and fuel his anger towards you.  Don’t do it!

7. How old do you want to be when you get married?

What if your date is 26 and she wanted to be married by that age?  NO pressure for you.  This can also make you look like you’re currently hunting for a spouse because your biological clock is ticking.  Talk about how to look desperate in five seconds—which is probably the time it will take you to drop this bomb on your date.

8. Are you attracted to me

This places you on the spot in a very awkward situation.  If your date is attracted to you, you will know.  It’s called body language.  Learn it, live it, love it—it’s a skill that will save you a lot of trouble in the future.

9. Why are you single?

Because I keep going on these empty-unfulfilling-expensive-self-degrading first dates and I can’t seem to make one take me up for a second date!  Really?  Is that the answer you want?  If someone is still single is their business but it can easily make this person feel as if they have no qualities worth anyone’s time—or she’s just playing the game and you’ve exposed her.  She could have changed for you but now you’ve ruined that and won’t get a second chance to find out.

10. “I Googled you and I was wondering…”

Stalker alert!  Yes, it’s understandable that you looked up your date just to make sure no mug shots popped up, but come on, please don’t mention it, keep that minor detail to yourself.
