If you think America has one favorite dog breed, think again. A new state-by-state analysis of more than 1.2 million dog insurance records found that Labrador Retrievers are the top breed in the most states (16), but they’re far from a nationwide runaway winner. Chihuahuas are close behind, leading in 14 states, especially across the Southwest. Labrador Retrievers dominate much of the Northeast, while Pit Bulls are popular in several Southern states. What may be most surprising is what didn’t make the list. Despite their national popularity, breeds like Poodles, Beagles, Bulldogs, and Dachshunds failed to claim the number-one spot in any state. Overall, eight different breeds took the top spot somewhere in the country, showing just how regional America’s dog preferences really are.
