Bethenny Frankel's late boyfriend Dennis Shields' last words may explain what caused his death.

According to TMZ, Dennis told EMTs and cops he'd taken prescribed oxycodone, Vicodin and a sleeping pill to ease the pain from a back injury.

Alone, opioids or sleeping pills can slow down respiratory function. So, when the two are combined, they have such a dangerous effect on the body they can result in death.

As previously reported, Dennis was found dead in his Trump Tower apartment on August 10. Law enforcement sources told TMZ at the time that they discovered that his assistant had administered two doses of Narcan, which reverses the effects of opioid drugs, but he lost consciousness before the medication could take effect. Dennis was unable to be revived. He was 51.

An autopsy report and official cause of death have yet to be released.

Following Dennis' death, news broke that he had proposed to Bethenny four months before his passing.

“He proposed to her with a ring in April. She didn’t wear the ring because they had some things to work out first,” a friend told People earlier this week. “There were some hurdles to overcome before she could make that level of a commitment. She loved him. He’s her family and her best friend and her confidante. Her partner and her business partner.”

The insider added, “She didn’t say no. She would have loved to have married him, but there were some hurdles to overcome first.”

The two started dating in 2016 — three years after the Real Housewives Of New York star filed for divorce from ex-husband Jason Hoppy.

Bethenny attended Dennis’ funeral service earlier this week.
